...Prove Their Worth...

"Problems worthy of attack

A kind of running diary and rambling pieces on my struggles with assorted books, classes, and other things, as they happen. You must be pretty bored to be reading this...

Holy crap. It's snowing again. This winter is ridiculously cool.

I'm currently concentrating on working my way through Schutz's Geometrical Methods of Mathematical Physics, along with a PDF book on vector spaces. They are both good stuff. Schutz's book is kinda hard, but doable, which is probably good. I wish I was reading it as part of a course, though, since every once in a while Schutz says something I just can't follow (or, more accurately, can't follow without investing several hours into decryption), and it would be really nice to save myself some time by asking questions. Ah well. The vector space book isn't very hard, so far, but it's well-written, and quite enlightening. I'm currently reading the chapter on inner product spaces, and while it is good overall, I have to say the discussion of Gram-Schmidt orthogonalization is very confusing - probably because it doesn't use any pictures, and has little motivating a few of the definitions. Luckily, I've seen this particular bit of material before in another text, so I'm able to muddle through. This is really the first time I've got any complaints with this book, though. It's good stuff.

Meanwhile, I'm trying to suss out Lie derivatives in Schutz's book. It could be going better. Sigh.
